If you didn’t know otherwise, dangling the keys of your new house or apartment online to show your friends you’ve bought your first home, or moved into your next home seems like a harmless post. However, one unsuspecting “friend” or someone a friend knows sees this post can easily copy your key and burgle you.

BurgLARIES rECORDED IN BROMLEY

According to Crime Rate, Bromley is in the top 10 safest of 33 towns across London. However, it has so far, in 2022, 1,491 burglaries, but still 30% less than London, and that’s still almost 500 burglaries a month.

Most Affordable Borough

In January 2022, a published an article highlighting that Bromley is the most affordable borough for first-time buyers. And as we know, first-time buyers are typically younger people, and they tend to use social media quite prominently. So, they’re more likely to share their exciting news with their online audience, often dangling their new home keys.

Turn for the Worse

A burglar with computer and technical skills can crop the key, print it out and cut it on paper before putting it on a key blank to carefully file around it. Voila! They have your key.

If you’d like to see how they do it in more detail, feel free to watch the video below:

summary

If you’re in the process of buying your first home in beautiful Bromley, then think twice about sharing a dangling key picture in front of the front door. Consider using fake keys, or keys that are no longer used.
