I was wondering about the origins of the name Penge so it was handy that I needed to write this guide since it led me to discovering the word derives from Anglo Saxon and Celtic words that refer to the area being historically surrounded by forest. Who knew? Certainly when I’m out and about on locksmith duties in the area it doesn’t feel like it used to be forested.
In terms of famous residents Penge was clearly not an overly popular place to live as they are few and far between although my careful research did throw up a British prime minister nobody has ever heard of and a famous tradesman indeed!
Andrew Bonar Law – Ex British Prime Minister 1922 – 23
Thomas Crapper – Inventor of the U Bend for the modern toilet (apparently it used to be an S bend) not a locksmith near me in Penge but surely a famous resident indeed!
Like any London district Penge has a good many bus routes to get you to the nearby towns of Crystal Palace, Sydenham, Beckenham and Elmers End as well as Bromley and Selhurst Park. Penge is in fact part of the Borough of Bromley and in turn part of Greater London.
It used to be noted for its many drinking establishments but many of them have now closed or changed use so not so much these days. Probably more lockins than lockouts in those days. Still if you have left your keys at the pub or a restaurant and need to get into your house we’re here to help out with our locksmith expertise and tools.
Surprisingly there used to be a canal running through Penge part of the Croydon canal. It seems odd to think of London life moving so slowly although of course there are still operational canals around other parts of London just not in the Bromley area.
